| | Opera Noire: Celebrating the Contributions of African-American Classical Musicians | | The title, "Concert and Afterglow Gala" says it all, n'est-ce pas? Opera Noire will be the red-carpet/black-tie event of the season! New York City's midtown will be the hottest place on the East Coast when an orchestra comprised of rising-star musicians and a stage full of internationally-acclaimed vocalists under the baton of Maestro Willie Anthony Waters take over for one amazing night of music and fabulousness. Opera Noire was established by Kenneth Overton, Robert Mack and Barron Coleman "to empower members to achieve their full potential in a mutually supportive, honest and positive environment which promotes effective training, constructive sharing and unselfish generosity. Our vision is to provide every member the opportunity to develop vocally, dramatically and artistically, which in turn fosters self-confidence and personal growth." You won't want to miss this show on Saturday, December 22 at 6pm at the Hammerstein Ballroom (311 WEST 34TH STREET) in Manhattan. The program includes opera arias, duets, trios and other scenes from Mozart, Puccini, Gershwin's Porgy & Bess and many others. The event is sponsored in part by the Manhattan Center and Opera Noire and will be documented by Black Entertainment Television (BET) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Tickets at Ticketmaster.com starting at $25. | | | John Wesley Wright, tenor | | This is the season of Handel's Messiah. No matter where you reside, it's almost guaranteed to be in your city. In Cincinnati? You're in luck! Support tenor John Wesley Wright as he performs the opera twice this month on the same day. (And if you're feeling bold, ask him to join you in a rousing game of tennis.)
Catch the first show in the morning. Handel’s Messiah (Christmas portion) at St. John’s Unitarian Church Sunday, December 16 at 11am.
The second show: Under the baton of conductor Neal Gittleman, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra presents Andrea Chenoweth, soprano; Steven Rickards, countertenor; John Wesley Wright, tenor; Elias Mokole, baritone and the Dayton Philharmonic Chamber Choir in Handel's Messiah. Sunday, December 16 at 4pm, Westminster Presbyterian Church. Single Ticket Prices: $24 General Admission. | | Eric Owens, bass-baritone | | The Washington Post referred to Eric Owens as "bronze-voiced." A native of Philadelphia, Owens began his music training as a pianist at the age of six, followed by formal oboe study at age eleven under Lloyd Shorter of the Delaware Symphony and Louis Rosenblatt of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He later studied voice while an undergraduate at Temple University and then as a graduate student at the Curtis Institute of Music, and currently studies with Armen Boyajian. He serves on the Board of Trustees of both The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and Astral Artistic Services. The bass-baritone will make his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as General Leslie Groves in Doctor Atomic. "The Bomb. It changed our lives and our world forever. Hard to fathom a bigger — or more personal — subject." Sounds menacing, but it's nothing for this man in uniform. Catch Eric Owens at Chicago's Lyric Opera on December 14, 17 & 19. All shows begin at 7:30pm. Shows run until January 9, 2008. Check site for more information.
| | | Nicole Heaston, soprano | | | photo: Sunny Scwab | Los Angeles Opera presents Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème. "Against the festive holiday backdrop of 19th-century Paris on Christmas Eve, starving artists in the Latin Quarter engage in high jinks, high spirits and high romance. A chance meeting between the young poet Rodolfo and his neighbor Mimi leads to love while that other bohemian Marcello and his coquettish amour Musetta find that breaking up is hard to do. As the saying goes, the course of true love never did run smooth, and carefree happiness can turn to heartbreak in the twinkling of an eye." Soprano Nicole Heaston sings the role of Musetta under the baton of Maestro Placido Domingo. This is her LA Opera debut! Laquita Mitchell also debuts in the role of Musetta. Go and you'll see one of them. Either way, it's a win-win! Saturday December 1, 2007 7:30 p.m. Wednesday December 5, 2007 7:30 p.m. Saturday December 8, 2007 7:30 p.m. Sunday December 9, 2007 1:00 p.m. Tuesday December 11, 2007 7:30 p.m. Friday December 14, 2007 7:30 p.m. Sunday December 16, 2007 1:00 p.m. | | | Terrance Brown, baritone | | Recitalist and concert artist Terrance Brown is a native of West Blocton, Alabama. His performance credits include: Salieri in Rimsky Korakov's Mozart and Salieri, Jake/Robbins in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Le Baili in Massenet's Werther, Le Marquis in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Dashwood in Adamo's Little Women. This month, he will be featured in Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra's production of George Frideric Handel's Messiah, the best know and most performed choral work of the season. Saturday, December 8 at 7pm at the First Baptist Church Downtown. Also featuring Dr. Kenneth Fulton, Chorusmaster; Kathryn Drake, Soprano; Jennifer Crippen, Mezzo-Soprano; Jin Hin Yap, Tenor; and the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus. | | Kishna Davis, soprano | | Greenville Symphony Orchestra presents Holiday at Peace featuring soprano Kishna Davis under the baton of Edvard Tchivzhel. Ms. Davis is a graduate of the Juilliard Opera Center, where she also received her Master's degree in Music. She holds degrees from the Juilliard School and Morgan State University. She is also dean of the Celebration School of the Arts, which offers music and dance classes and is affiliated with Celebration Church in Columbia. See this diva perform Christmas favorites at The Peace Center Concert Hall on December 17, 18 & 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $15 - $35 (children 12 & under $10). Visit site for more information.
| | Steven Cole, tenor | | Tenor Steven Cole made his San Francisco Opera debut in 1980 and returns to the stage in an opera by Igor Stravinsky, The Rake's Progress, as Sellem the auctioneer. The SFO's opera compendium: "a reckless young Englishman is seduced by the Devil—or is it his own shadow?—into abandoning his true love for a life of shallow pleasures." How intriguing! Cole has also graced the stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and Washington Opera. He performs regularly in Europe. Catch him and mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves on Saturday, December 1 at 8pm; Tuesday, December 4 & 7 at 8pm (high-definition video projection screens will be featured on the balcony level for these performances); and Sunday, December 9 at 2pm. | | | Denyce Graves, mezzo-soprano | | Another star who needs no introduction... Named one of Glamour's Women of the Year, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves joins Maestro Timothy Muffitt and the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra for a Christmas celebration of holiday favorites for the whole family. Thursday, December 20 at 7:30pm. Visit site for more information. | | Kevin Deas, bass | | I think the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra web site says it best: " Don't miss the holiday concert of the season! Along with the amazing 200-voice Festival High School Chorale, your RPO performs holiday favorites with vocalist Kevin Deas in a concert filled with fun and festivity." Right on. This season, Deas appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Opera Boston, Houston Symphony, Detroit Symphony, the Washington Chorus, The Collegiate Chorale (NY) and Staatskapelle Weimar. He also sang Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Op.125 "Choral") under the baton of Maestro Barenboim with Filarmonica della Scala in Accra celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of Ghana. You have four opportunities to experience this amazing show: December 20-23, 2007 at 8pm at the Eastman School Theatre or call 585-274-1100 for more information. | | | Michèle Crider, soprano | | The Metropolitan Opera will stage its production of Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) by Giuseppe Verdi featuring soprano Michèle Crider as Amelie. The opera is based on the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, but due to its political nature, composer Verdi was asked by the government to change the names as protection. Quel risqué! Few vocalists are rewarded the prestige of winning the esteemed District Metropolitan Opera Auditions. Crider has done it twice. Be sure to check out her vocal skills on December 17, 21, 24 & 29 at 8pm; Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at 8pm; and Saturday, January 5 at 1:30pm. | | Quote of the Month | | "When aspiring to a musical career, study everywhere as earnestly as you can, be prepared in all phases of the arts. Learn to act, dance as well as sing. Prepare yourself for opera as well as concertizing. There will come a day in your lives when you'll thank your maker for having done so." ~Carol Brice, contralto compiled by Lisa Bryce, soprano | | | Kenneth Overton, baritone | | Arizona, this Handel's for you! Philadelphia-native Kenneth Overton of Opera Noire fame (see above) will be the featured baritone for this Messiah. He has also been heard on the stages of Connecticut Opera, Metro Lyric Opera (NJ), Houston Ebony Opera Guild, OperaDelaware, Nashville Opera, Opera Broadway Boheme and City Center Encore. An advocate of modern opera works, Mr. Overton was a winner of the Liederkranz Competition, as well as a national winner of the Leontyne Price Vocal Competition. Watch the Phoenix Symphony Chamber Ochestra and Chorus perform under the baton of Maestro Michael Christie. December 14-20, 2007 at 7:30pm at the Central United Methodist Church ( 1875 N Central Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85004). Also featuring soprano Nathalie Paulin, mezzo-soprano Stacey Rishoi, and tenor John McVeigh. Tickets: $28 General Admission. | | | Theresa Santiago, soprano | | The Santa Rosa Symphony will feature Theresa Santiago, soprano; Susan Platts, mezzo-soprano; Richard Clement, tenor; and Dean Elzinga, bass baritone with the Santa Rosa Symphony Honor Choir performing Giuseppe Verdi's huge Requiem Mass. (Seriously--soprano, alto, tenor, and bass soloists, mixed chorus, two flutes and piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets, four bassoons, four horns, four trumpets, four more trumpets offstage, three trombones, tuba (replacing the obsolete ophicleide), timpani, bass drum, and strings. You can't tell me that's not huge.) SRS says: "Like the operas for which Verdi is celebrated, and true to the composer's passionate Italian heritage, Messa da Requiem is full of vigorous rhythms, sublime melodies and powerful contrasts. Imagine the SRS Honor Choir fronted by renowned operatic stars in a complex weaving of themes of life and death. The Requiem is by turns hushed, sorrowful, agitated, consoling, thundering and angelic. So monumental it comprises the entire program for our holiday concert set." Native New Yorker Theresa Santiago is near and dear to the heart of MHS. She recently issued her first solo CD featuring works by Spanish composers on the Musical Heritage label. See this soprano perform live on December 8 & 10 at 8pm and Sunday, December 9 at 3pm, Wells Fargo Center. Tickets: $27 - $50. | | Soulful Symphony | | Under the baton of Darin Atwater, the Soulful Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will open its season with A Great Joy. This holiday treat will have you giddier than spiked eggnog. Every time I make the trip out to Baltimore, I wonder if the musicians on stage have as much fun as the chair-dancing audience they captivate. My guess? They do! These performances are always sold out. Make sure you're not left out in the cold. Saturday, December 8, 2007 at 8pm at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. | | Leonard Rowe, baritone | | Winner of two competitions, Licia Albanese/Puccini Foundation and the Bellini International Voice Competition, baritone Leonard Rowe is a native of Fredericksburg, Virginia and a graduate of North Carolina School of the Arts. He started this season performing with the New York City Opera in Margaret Garner by Richard Danielpour and Toni Morrison. This past season, Rowe performed with the Cape Town Opera in South Africa, the Michigan Opera Theater in Detroit and the Israel Kibbutz Orchestra in Tel Aviv. Leonard sang the role of Jake on the World Premiere Recording of the Original 1935 Production version of Porgy and Bess on the Decca Label released in September of 2006. He has also performed various roles throughout the US with companies including Mobile Opera, Atlanta Opera, Nashville Opera, Grand Rapids Opera, Piedmont Opera, Opera Carolina, Opera Company of North Carolina, Roanoke Opera, Opera Tampa, New Orleans Opera, and Virginia Opera. Rowe will perform with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic when they present the Polar Express Holiday Show at the Kirby Center, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on December 7 & 8 at 7pm. | | Awet Andemicael, soprano | | | photo: Rick Stockwell | The Boston Herald declared Awet Andemicael as "a singer to watch." The soprano holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of California at Irvine. She has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, Lyric Opera San Diego, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, and the Opera Company of Brooklyn. In the 2007-08 season, she reprises her sought-after interpretation of Trujaman in de Falla's El Retablo de Maese Pedro with the San Francisco Symphony, sings Isabella in Eachberg's The Doctor of Alcantara at Strathmore Hall, and joins the Nashville Symphony for performances of Handel's Messiah. See her perform at the Comdata Special Event on Thursday, December 20 at 7pm and December 21 & 22 at 8pm. Under the baton of George Mabry, the Nashville Symphony and Chorus will perform Handel's perinnial masterpiece. Also featuring mezzo-soprano Jennifer Dudley, tenor Thomas Cooley and baritone Weston Hurt. | | Janice Chandler-Eteme, soprano | | Doesn't it seem as though today's musicians, especially Black musicians, must be able to perform in diverse settings and in multiple genres? We go from singing Messiah to Soulful Messiah with the same conviction, performing Tchaikovsky's and Ellington/Strayhorn's Nutcracker Suite with the same verve. That's the versatility that the world demands and that's the versatility Janice Chandler-Eteme delivers. This soprano holds a B.A. in vocal performance from Oakwood College and a M.M. in vocal performance from Indiana University. She has studied with Virginia Zeani, Margaret Harshaw and Todd Duncan. She has recorded Soulful Messiah, Angels On High (with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony), and her latest collaboration is with the premier Gospel artist and composer Richard Smallwood on his eagerly-anticipated recording "Journey: Live In New York," also featuring such formidable R&B artists as Chaka Khan and Kelly Price.
