What we also have to find is justice.                                ~Rigoberta Menchu Marian Anderson String Quartet Sunday, 22 April 2007 The award-winning Marian Anderson String Quartet was founded on September 30, 1989 as the Chaminade Quartet. Then in 1991, the ensemble won the International Cleveland Quartet Competition immortalizing themselves as the first African American group in history to win a classical music competition. This resplendent achievement prompted the quartet to ask contralto Marian Anderson if they could honor her by adopting her name. The gracious Anderson acquiesced. To show their appreciation, the newly named Marian Anderson String Quartet performed for Ms. Anderson and her nephew, conductor James DePriest. The artistic endeavors of Nicole Cherry and Marianne Henry, violin; Diedra Lawrence, viola; and Prudence McDaniel, cello have brought them to such venues as New York’s Alice Tully Hall, the Corcoran Gallery, the Library of Congress, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Kilbourn Hall, The University of Southern California and the Chateau Cantanac-Brown in Bordeaux, France. Among many notable performances, in 1993, they performed at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Centre as part of the 52nd presidential inaugural celebration.
