The Buskaid Soweto String Project (BSSP) embarks this year on a United States tour with spirited concerts of classical, classic pop and kwela music. The group was founded in 1997 in the marginalized township of Soweto (an area southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa). This rotating ensemble of young string players is the musical product of Buskaid, a charitable trust established to help local children through music. Their funding now comes from corporate sponsorship and individual donations, CD sales and performances by the Buskaid students.
The ensemble currently consists of over 100 students ranging in age from 5 to their mid-twenties. These students come from many underserved local communities. Many more children are turned away from participating in the program due to a lack of resources.
The Buskaid Soweto String Project produced a smaller string ensemble Photograph courtesy of James Sparshatt whose high level of performance and musical style has made them one of the most sought-after groups in the country. The website boasts a number of appearances with "international artists such as Steven Isserlis and Bernarda Fink, several performances in the presence of Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki, as well as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Duke of York."
The BSSP will be joined in Boston, MA, by violinist Mariana Green-Hill for a special concert not to be missed.
The group will also appear in New York. For more information visit BSSP's website.
